Updating Kenya Power and Lighting Company token meters

Kenya Power and Lighting Company said that over four million meters have been updated out of the 7.4 million it targets for upgrading.

The electricity distributor has urged the remaining customers to update their meters once they receive the codes.

The procedure is easy—just key in the codes. The update, which is free of charge, is crucial for customers to continue enjoying uninterrupted electricity services.

What you should know when updating your token meter.

1. Steps to update your token meter.

Kenya Power and Lighting Company explained that customers will receive two codes via SMS. “The first code is the reset code, and the second code is the update code,” it stated.

Below is a sample of the message you will receive. “Your meter 54601xxxxxx is scheduled for Update Token Meter Yako Campaign.

Load any bought and unused tokens before you update your meter. Buy a new Electricity token for any amount to receive the Update Token Meter Yako codes & follow the instructions given.

If the Update is successful, your meter will accept the Electricity token.”

Once you receive an SMS to update your meter, follow the two steps: Key in code 1 to reset. Key in code 2 to update.

2. The process is done in phases.

The electricity distributor noted the process will be done in phases, and as such, no one will be left out.

“Our dear customers, the #UpdateTokenMeterYako exercise is being done in phases.

So, ukiona beshte yako ama neighbour amepata codes za ku-update, tulia tu, zina-come. Usiachwe gizani,” it stated.

3. Who is responsible for updating token meters?

KPLC clarified that tenants, not landlords, are responsible for updating their token meters.

Tenants should load all previously purchased tokens before entering the update codes to avoid rendering them invalid.

“Landlords, wondering how to update multiple token meters in your apartment? Usijali, your tenants are responsible for this exercise.

When their token meters are scheduled, each tenant will receive reset and update codes with their next token purchase.

They will then load these codes into their token meters following the steps provided in the SMS,” Kenya power stated.

4. How do you know if your meter is updated?

Kenya Power confirmed that they can load new tokens once the prepaid meters are updated.

“If the update is successful, your meter will accept new electricity tokens going forward.”

5. How to retrieve deleted codes?

Did you accidentally delete codes sent by Kenya Power? Dial *977# to retrieve them.

“Customers to use the *977# USSD as a backup in accessing their reset and update codes even in cases where they have lost the text messages that were sent with the codes,” KPLC said.

Which are the top counties in updating KPLC meters?

Kenya Power revealed Kiambu, Mombasa, Nyandarua, Nyeri, and Embu were the top five counties where residents had updated their token meters.

On the other hand, Kitui, Siaya, Tana River and Homa Bay trailed. KPLC’s Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP) phase V is set to be implemented at a cost of KSh 1.85 billion.
