Commercial Pilot License Requirements

The Commercial Pilot License is issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCCA) and allows one to fly airplanes for compensation or hire. As of my last update, the Civil Aviation Authority of Kenya (CAAK) oversees aviation regulations and licensing in Kenya. The process for obtaining a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) in Kenya generally follows international standards, but specific requirements and procedures may vary.

Requirements to Get a Commercial Pilot License in Kenya

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Own a class 1 medical certificate.
  3. Have a Kenyan Private Pilot License or meet the requirements for application for military license or conversion of foreign license.
  4. Receive a logbook endorsement from a certified instructor who;
  • Conducts the required required training on aeronautical knowledge areas that apply to the aircraft category or class rating sought.
  • Certified that the person is prepared for the required knowledge test that applies to the aircraft category and class rating sought.

5. Pass the required knowledge test on the relevant aeronautical knowledge areas.

6. Meet the required aeronautical experience of the applicable provisions that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought before applying for the practical test.

7. Receive the required training and a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor who;

  • Conducted the training on the areas of operation that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought.
  • Certified that the person is prepared for the required practical test.

8. Pass the required practical test (GFT) on the areas of operation that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought.

9. Pass the English language proficiency exam and attain either of;

  • Operational level 4 is valid for 3 years.
  • Extended level 5 valid for 6 years.
  • Expert level 6 valid for life.

Application Requirements

The applicant should have the following;

  • Fully completed CPL application forms are available on KCCA’s website.
  • A valid medical certificate- Class 1.
  • 4 passport-size photographs- full face (2cm by 2.5cm).
  • A photo identification card or passport or birth certificate and a copy of the same.
  • Certified copies of the last 2 pages of the personal logbook. The pages show the latest flying experience certified by the pilot’s supervisor.
  • Payment of the prescribed fees- Kshs 4,500.
