Mr. Money, John Kinuthia Makumi, was born in Kabete, Kiambu County, in 1930 and has lived there his entire life. He dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue his business interests.

His first business was selling chicken, which he would buy at a lower cost in Kiambu County’s interior villages and resell profitably in the Kabete market.

Mr. Makumi saved his small profits and began investing in land and real estate through hard work, discipline, and determination.

By the time Makumi died on December 5, 2019, he had amassed vast wealth in the billions of shillings.

With the construction of Lavington Mall, the area’s largest mall, the tycoon left an indelible mark in the rich suburbs of Lavington.

The mall features urban housing retail stores, beauty salons and restaurants, a supermarket, and a children’s play area.

In addition to a 200-acre plot of land in Loitoktok, Kajiado County, he owns the Zadar building in Wangige, Kiambu County, the Fountain Church in Ngara Nairobi, and the upcoming Wangige mall.

When he died of cardiac arrest at the age of 89, the billionaire was living peacefully under one roof with his two wives, Agnes Waringa and Irene Nyakio.

Despite dropping out of school at a young age, Makumi provided the best education for his children, sending them to the world’s top universities.

One of his daughters, Wanjiku Kinuthia, ran unsuccessfully for the Kabete constituency parliamentary seat in the 2017 general elections.
