Maverick Aoko Otieno, popularly known by her middle name ‘Aoko’, is a seasoned writer and a journalist by profession. She has come to be for her controversial sentiments against toxic feminism. Aoko is loved and loathed in almost equal measure thanks to her stance on one gender always playing the victim.

Biography
Maverick Aoko Otieno was born and bred in a humble background in Nyakach, which is located in Kisumu County. She attended her primary and high school studies at Nyong’ onga. Raised in a Luo culture, she not only learned the customs of the society to respect their husbands but also tried to correct some of the traditions that are not deemed right in contemporary society.

Aoko completed her high school studies in Nyang’onga Secondary School then proceeded to Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) to study Journalism. At the time of writing this article, she is currently doing a degree in Political Science at the University of Nairobi.
Career
She began her writing journey while in college pursuing her diploma in Journalism at the KIMC. Finding a platform for her to pursue her passion for writing at the beginning was a challenge. Therefore, she resorted to utilizing a rather free platform, Facebook.
After writing on her Facebook timeline for a few months, she got noticed by ‘The Nairobian’ editors who offered her a chance to publish his articles with no payment. While working at the ‘The Nairobian newspaper’ as a writer, she got the exposure that she needed, and later she was hired by ‘The Standard Magazine.
In one of her interviews done by Standard Media, she describes herself as a very pragmatic person and a realist. She is frustrated by the fact that society and more so the youths are idealists when it comes to matters of relationships and life in general.
She’s trying to change the mindset of youngsters, especially of her female counterparts. First, to stop playing the victim mentality and work their way up to become successful, Second, to stop the sponsor mentality, and stop viewing men as a means to an end.

Cyber Harassment Case
Maverick Aoko Otieno faced two other counts of cyber harassment and fraudulent use of electronic data.
It is alleged that on August 3, she published false, defamatory, and threatening information touching on one ‘Amber Ray and ‘Jamal’.
“She did this knowing it to be malicious, false, and well-calculated to cause fear, panic and destroy the reputation and professional career and livelihood of one Beth Wambui Mbuitu,” the court documents stated.
Aoko who appeared before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000.
The magistrate said her phones and laptops confiscated from her during the arrest are exhibits and can’t be released at this stage.
She directed the officers to consider releasing them as they have been subjected to forensics investigations.
The application will be reconsidered before the trial court.
