Kapu e-Commerce; How it Works, Order & Pay

Kapu e-Commerce is a new shopping platform designed to offer Kenyan consumers affordable groceries at wholesale prices. Unlike traditional kiosks, Kapu allows customers to buy products in the exact quantities they need while ensuring access to a broader range of items.

The platform was founded by former Jumia Kenya executives and is set to revolutionize how urban consumers shop for their daily essentials.

The Kapu Business Model

Kapu’s e-commerce model focuses on cost efficiency and community-based shopping. By sourcing products directly from farms and manufacturers, Kapu eliminates unnecessary supply chain costs. The company also reduces food waste by optimizing logistics, ensuring that savings are passed on to consumers.

One unique aspect of Kapu is the “Pamoja” (group ordering) feature, where customers who order together enjoy even lower prices. This strategy enhances affordability while encouraging community participation in bulk purchases.

Leadership Team Behind Kapu

Kapu was launched by a team of former Jumia Kenya executives who bring extensive experience in e-commerce:

  • Sam Chappatte – Former Jumia CEO, now Kapu’s CEO
  • Cyrus Onyiego – Ex-Jumia Travel MD and Jumia Food COO, now Kapu’s COO
  • Former Jumia CMO – Now Kapu’s Head of Marketing
  • Stanislas Barth – Ex-Jumia Head of Offline Sales, now Kapu’s Head of Supply

The leadership team is committed to creating an e-commerce model specifically tailored to the needs of Kenyan consumers.

How Kapu Works

Kapu simplifies grocery shopping by allowing customers to order online and collect their goods from a designated Agent collection center. Here’s how it works:

  1. Sourcing & Pricing: Kapu sources fresh produce and household goods directly from farmers and manufacturers, ensuring high-quality products at wholesale prices.
  2. Placing an Order: Customers can place orders via WhatsApp or by dialing 7898# to register. First-time users receive KES 50 cash back.
  3. Agent Collection Centers: Orders are delivered free of charge the next day to a nearby Kapu-branded agent, ensuring convenience for consumers.
  4. Group Ordering (Pamoja): Customers can form groups to place bulk orders and unlock additional discounts.

Where Kapu Agents are Located

Kapu currently operates more than 1,500 Agent Collection Centers across Nairobi, with plans for expansion. Some of the locations include:

  • Eastlands
  • Kasarani
  • Kawangware
  • South B
  • Kibra
  • Embakasi
  • Githurai
  • Kiambu

Kapu Agents consist of local entrepreneurs, such as mama mbogas, salon owners, stay-at-home mums, and students, who earn extra income while helping their communities save on grocery costs.

Future Expansion Plans

Kapu aims to expand its presence across Nairobi and beyond. By March 2023, the company plans to extend its reach, providing more consumers with access to affordable groceries.

CEO’s Vision for Kapu

During the launch, Kapu CEO Sam Chappatte highlighted the company’s mission:

“We think it’s unfair that consumers in Kenya spend 40% of their income on food when Americans spend only 6%. This is a huge blocker to social mobility. Our goal at Kapu is to build the most relevant e-commerce model for urban consumers in Africa. By working with existing community groups and local entrepreneurs, we believe we can reduce the cost of goods and unlock opportunities for millions of people.”

Conclusion

Kapu e-Commerce is set to transform grocery shopping in Kenya by making everyday essentials more affordable and accessible. Through its direct sourcing model, community-driven approach, and efficient logistics, Kapu provides consumers with quality goods at competitive prices.

As the platform continues to grow, it promises to bring financial relief to many urban households while empowering local entrepreneurs.
