The ‘Kang’ata Care Programme’, the brainchild of Murang’a County Governor Irungu Kang’ata, on Thursday won the prestigious Gold Medal at the 2024 African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) Innovative Management Awards.
Kang’ata Care was recognized for its groundbreaking approach to addressing healthcare affordability and accessibility, making healthcare a reality for the vulnerable populations in Murang’a County.
Muranga County ”Kangata care ” Medical Scheme whose Features are:
- A medical insurance scheme that’s free to 20k households.
- The households will be identified by Community Health Volunteers in consultation with MCAs. This process will commence last year and was completed in 3 weeks time.
- Benefits include free access to medical services nationally ( inpatient and outpatient). Unique features include dental and optical covers plus last expense cover for 100k for principal member ,spouse and children plus 50k for parents.
Serving over 160,000 individuals, Kang’ata care has redefined healthcare in Murang’a. The award places Kang’ata Care at the forefront of innovative healthcare solutions, setting a high benchmark for public service initiatives.
The country has previously earned recognition for initiatives such as the Huduma Center (2nd place in 2022) and eCitizen (4th place in 2017), but Kang’ata Care’s triumph is particularly historic as it makes it the first Kenyan programme to be awarded the top honour in the prestigious awards.
Speaking on this achievement, Governor Kang’ata expressed pride in his staff, applauding their dedication and innovation in healthcare delivery.
Murang’a Wins Africa Continental Award
The Gold Medal comes as Kenya’s first victory in the AAPAM awards at this level.
“This recognition underscores our commitment to making healthcare affordable, accessible, and transformative for the people of Murang’a County,” he said.
Public Service Principal Secretary Amos Gathecha noted that the award has not only elevated Kenya but also provided a model for other nations to emulate in the pursuit of universal healthcare.
Kang’ata Care’s comprehensive healthcare package includes free inpatient and outpatient services, dental and optical care, as well as financial support for overseas treatment.
The programme also provides vital benefits such as Ksh.100,000 for family support in the event of the principal member’s death, Ksh.25,000 for secondary school fees for dependents and Ksh.10,000 for marriage or childbirth benefits.
