Meet John Onyango Deputy DCI After the Exit of Kamwende

John Onyango is currently serving as the Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya. He was appointed in February 2024 to replace Nicholas Ireri Kamwende, who retired. Before his promotion, Onyango was the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and previously served as the DCI boss in the Nyanza region.

As Deputy DCI, Onyango’s responsibilities include overseeing administrative and operational coordination within the DCI. His previous role at CRIB involved offender profiling, crime trend analysis, and enhancing inter-agency collaboration through shared criminal data. This experience positions him to play a significant role in enhancing the DCI’s investigative capabilities and efficiency in crime management

Onyango takes over from Nicholas Ireri Kamwende who retired from the service after attaining retirement age.

The handover ceremony was conducted at DCI headquarters Mazingira Building.

He will deputize Mohamed Amin as the deputy DCI. John Onyango is also a former Nyanza Region DCI boss.

As the new deputy his main job will be among others administration and coordination of various operations.

CRIB where he has been is key in DCI operations and was formed as a result of the need to have a centralized unit that profiles offenders and provides advisory.

Its main mandate includes offender profiling and crime.

It collects crime data from all over the country and stores it in a database, identifies crime patterns and trends, and researches the same to advise the stakeholders and provide a link between investigative units in the country to enable them to share criminal data among themselves.

It also integrates with other government data repositories to enrich the offender profiling process and liaise with investigative and operational units by providing analytical assistance.

The changes triggered movements within the service. In other changes, DCI Mohamed Amin moved the heads of DCI at Nairobi’s Langata, Starehe, and Kasarani sub-counties.

Meanwhile, the Nyanza region got a new regional police commander after the retirement of Manasse Musyoka.

Former commandant of Kenya Police Railways and Ports Commandant Patrick Tito took over as the new RPC in the changes.

Tito was last week unveiled as the new Nyanza RPC. Officials said more changes are expected in the service to enhance operations at large.
