In the heart-rending tale of Wairimu Wa Mungai, a Kenyan woman who was recently featured in Kenya’s diaspora media, she bravely shared her life story, shedding light on how she found herself trapped in a world of prostitution and lesbianism due to dire financial circumstances.
Her journey began in the Kikuyu constituency, where she was born and raised. Unfortunately, when she was in Form Two her father was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure which plunged the family into financial hardships.
These challenging circumstances led Wairimu to run away from home and seek refuge in Naivasha. There, she found herself living with men who demanded sexual favors in return for shelter. She also fell into the clutches of drug abuse which later resulted in her contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
Forced to return home after falling ill, her mother welcomed her back with open arms and took her to the hospital for treatment. However, despite the care and support, she felt restless and uncomfortable being back home. Driven by a desperate desire to find a better life she decided to flee to Mombasa.
While on her journey to Mombasa, she caught a lift in a truck. Unexpectedly, the truck driver took advantage of her vulnerability and demanded that she sleep with him. Upon reaching Mombasa, Wairimu encountered a woman who introduced her to prostitution after taking her to the hospital for treatment, as she had been infected yet again.
For four months she engaged in prostitution until she met a woman from Tanzania who promised her a brighter future.
They began living together and she fell into a lesbian relationship as she yearned for love and stability. Things seemed to improve momentarily when she was warmly accepted by her partner’s family in Tanzania. However, their relationship eventually soured leaving Wairimu homeless and forced to return to Mombasa.
Determined to break free from her past, she began making necessary changes. She found work in a club but later engaged in a relationship with the club manager which resulted in pregnancy. Upon discovering her pregnancy, she was fired, prompting her to return home once again after giving birth.
Despite her turbulent journey, Wairimu’s mother accepted her back into the family’s embrace. They lived together, and when Jane’s child was nine months old she inexplicably abandoned her and moved to Nairobi Pipeline, resuming her life as a prostitute for another seven months.
It was during this time that her elder brother found her in Nairobi and forcibly brought her back home, much to her mother’s relief. Thanks to her mother’s efforts, she secured a job and worked diligently for several months until she became pregnant again, causing her mother significant distress.
Despite the hardships and disappointment, her mother continued to accept and support her daughter, remaining by her side throughout her pregnancy. Later, Wairimu Wa Mungai met a man who married her, and she gave birth once more. Unfortunately, her husband fell ill leaving Wairimu to shoulder the financial burdens of the family alone.
In a tragic turn of events, her mother also fell ill with a debilitating skin disease in 2016. Jane and her family find themselves struggling to keep her alive, a desperate plea for the comfort and stability that has eluded them throughout their lives. Wairimu’s life is a testament to the power of resilience and the strength that lies within, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy, support, and understanding for those who have walked a path riddled with pain and hardship. She is therefore calling upon Kenyans to help her, especially with a job to take care of her ailing husband and mother. Watch the full video below.
