Sifuna’s political journey began in 2013 when he joined the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) as a Technical/Advisory Committee Member.
He later served in a similar capacity for the National Super Alliance (NASA). In the 2017 general elections, he vied for the Kanduyi Constituency parliamentary seat but was unsuccessful in the ODM primaries.
Subsequently, he was nominated by ODM to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat, where he garnered 674,056 votes, finishing second to Johnson Sakaja.

In February 2018, Sifuna was appointed as the Secretary-General of ODM, succeeding Ababu Namwamba. His leadership within the party has been marked by strategic initiatives and vocal advocacy on national issues.
In 2019, he was elected Vice-Chair of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD). His persistence paid off in the 2022 general elections when he was elected as the Nairobi Senator with 716,876 votes.
