New Generation Number Plates Deadline In Kenya

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched a new generation number Plates system – digital plates last year to enhance security features

The new plates, which appear more presentable than the initial ones, thanks to the former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi, have been touted best by the majority of motorists.

Acquiring a new generation number plates, however, comes at a fee. NTSA cut the application rate to Ksh.3,050.

Everything is being digitalized including applying for a plate, a process that is online-enabled.

Here are the steps to apply for new-generation number Plates;

Visit the NTSA website and select vehicle registration and apply for the reflective plate.

1. Select the vehicle and click next.
2. Select the reason i.e new registration plate
3. Select a notification method, e.g, SMS
4. Choose a number plate and format (square or oblong)
5. Upload in PDF, original logbook and plates (front and rear)
6. Select the collection center and enter the ID number of the person to collect the plate.
7. Make a payment of Ksh.3, 050.
8. Finally, collection notifications will be sent via SMS.

The new generation number Plates were rolled out to enforce security features such as a hologram, watermark, unique and different serial numbers for rear and front plates, and a specially-imprinted national flag.

Plate registration dates commenced on October 1, 2022.

Motorists who fail to change the number plates before March 31, 2024 deadline will also attract a penalty of Ksh.20,000.

According to the CS, each plate will have a unique identification which will be tied to the chassis number of its vehicle to boost transparency in the registration of vehicles across the country.

“Each one of the new generation number Plates is going to have a serial number. There will be a correspondence between the serial number and the chassis number, so if the police arrest someone driving a Range Rover and the number plate is registered under a tractor, all that is what we will address with these plates,”

said Matiang’i.

He further noted that the Government hopes to have phased out existing plates within 18 months and Kenyans can begin acquiring the new ones through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Matiang’i said the plates will be fixed to vehicles imported to the country at the point of entry and will be synchronized with KRA systems to curb tax evasion in the car import business.
